Rise Above's Spectacular First Zine

The teens in the Rise Above Arts Program have published their first zine! Titled Our World: A mile in our shoes, the zine includes poetry, short stories, and artwork created by the youths at A Safe Place for Youth, a teen shelter run by the Boys and Girls Aid Society. Heartfelt, funny, sad, and often poignant, the work by these teens truly gives the reader a window into "their world," detailing the hardships and triumphs of love, friendship, and family, as well as insights into life and moral lessons learned along the way. Prints, collages, paintings, and other forms of art intermix with the poetry and writings, giving the reader further understanding about their world.

Our World is being sold for $2.00 (plus $1.00 shipping & handling if necessary).   All proceeds going back into Rise Above to help create more zines. If you would like to purchase a copy of Our World, please contact Katie Hill at teensriseabove@yahoo.com.

Great time at the Valentines Day Dance Scholarship Fundraiser

This past Saturday February 14th we hosted our first Valentines Day Dance at Century Highschool in Hillsboro, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the music performed by the Century High Jazz Band and the Hillsboro Community Arts Ensemble. There were even a few numbers performed by both the Jazz Band and Ensemble Soloists.

The evening was launched with dance lessons given by Liz Behnke and a handful of quick learners. Mainly the dances were Foxtrot and East Coast Swing. Then the night went into full gear when the Jazz Band took the stage and played many of the classic tunes that we all love, with some songs performed with an Ensemble soloist at the vocals.

Then we were treated to a heartfelt performance by the full Ensemble as they sung such acapella classics as "Isn't it Romantic?", "Blue Moon", and "When You Wish Upon a Star" (which gave me shivers).

The Jazz Band got back on stage to close off the evening with some more progressive jazz tunes while folks either danced, or listened, or helped themselves to cake and cookies, or got crafty at the Valentine craft table.

The night was capped with a final song that had my wife and I dancing Cha Cha, which was great fun. We handed out some fun prizes to those who either danced well or were quick learners, or who just had a great time. We had a photographer on site who set up an area for taking pictures, and a table for selling roses and teddy bears. It was all in fun and created nice memories for years to come of supporting a scholarship fund with dancing and live music.

Open Poetry Night a Huge Success

The teens of the Rise Above Arts program attended the Open Poetry Reading last night at the Walters Cultural Art Center. The night was a great success, with five of the teens reading poetry in front of 25+ audience members. The teens also enjoyed all of the poetry shared by the adults at the reading, who shared poetry that ranged from funny to poignant, from thought-provoking, to a little bit silly. Overall, it was a wonderful night!

Thanks to all of the poets who shared last night, and the audience members who were so encouraging to the teens! They really appreciate your support!

The Open Poetry Reading is open to everyone and is held on the second Tuesday of each month. Put it on your calendar and come join the teens at next month's reading on March 10th, at 7pm at the Walters Cultural Art Center in Hillsboro, OR.

Rise Above Art & Writing Program

The Rise Above Program has recently created an addition to the program - the Writing Program. For those of you who do not know the Rise Above Program is, it is an arts education program for homeless teens founded by Hillsboro Community Arts in 2007.

Each year, Rise Above offers 150+ teens the opportunity to express themselves through art and writing, while helping them to build confidence, learn about themselves, and realize a sense of accomplishment.

Coming up in March, Rise Above will have its Second Annual Art Exhibit at the Walters Cultural Art Center in Hillsboro, which will include an art opening on March 3rd (First Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m.

The teens in the Writing Program have been working hard to create their first zine, titled Our World. The zine will include poetry, short stories, and artwork by the teens in the Rise Above program and will be available to the public at the Second Annual Art Exhibit.
